Allium Flower Bulbs

Allium Flower Bulbs

Alliums are adored for their height and structure – their gentle movement in a breeze adds a sense of rhythm to any garden. The spherical flowerheads appear just as spring begins to fade, bridging the gap between early spring bedding and later-flowering blooms. Easygoing and long-lived, these low-maintenance flowers will come back reliably year after year with little fuss.

At Fothergill’s, we have a fantastic range of allium bulbs. Taller varieties create striking vertical lines through borders, while smaller types work well in groups, tucked among other perennial flower plants. Many alliums also make excellent dried flowers and attract pollinators during warmer months.

How to Grow Allium Bulbs

Choose a sunny, well-drained spot and plant each bulb at a depth roughly three times its own height. Space your allium bulbs apart to allow for airflow and future growth. Once planted, water them in and leave them be – there’s no need to lift or divide unless they become overcrowded after a few years. Alliums prefer not to sit in wet soil, so good drainage is key. In spring, their upright stems will rise and open into bold, globe-shaped flowers with little effort on your part.

When to Plant Allium Bulbs

Alliums are autumn planting flower bulbs, so they should be started in early to mid-autumn, ready to bloom next spring. Plant allium bulbs from September through November, before the ground becomes too cold or wet to work. Getting them into the soil during this window allows time for roots to develop before winter sets in. They lie dormant through the cold months, then send up shoots in spring, flowering from late May into early summer. They'll settle in fine as long as the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged.
