Grafted vegetable plants are a game-changer in the world of gardening, giving your plants better disease resistance, heavier yields, and bigger crop growth. By combining the superior root system of one plant (the rootstock) with the desirable qualities of another (the scion), grafted plants give you the best of both worlds.

Growing Grafted Vegetable Plants

Grafted vegetable plants are a favourite of both commercial and home vegetable growers. The vigorous rootstocks provide a strong foundation, allowing the plants to absorb more nutrients and water. This results in faster growth and a bigger, higher-quality harvest. Many grafted plants also boast superior disease resistance.

You can grow grafted vegetable plants in greenhouses, gardens, and containers (12 litres or bigger). If using a grow bag, plant a maximum of two plants per bag. Keep the grafted union above the soil level to stop suckers and adventitious roots from developing. Please note – do not remove the plastic grafting clip. It will fall off naturally as the plant grows.

We recommend feeding your plants from when the first flower buds appear. Use a plant fertiliser with high levels of potash and feed once a week, increasing to twice a week when the plant is cropping well. Most grafted plants will need some support as they grow, especially aubergine plants and tomatoes.
