Some heritage varieties have been steadily gaining in popularity with our customers in recent years - and we believe there are good reasons for them making such a comeback or remaining so popular. Heritage varieties have unbeatable flavours and reliability of course, and many gardeners like the fact that there's a story behind the varieties they grow.Potatoes are one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow. There's the nurturing process of chitting, planting and earthing-up, the anticipation of a good harvest as you dig through the soil and, of course, the unbeatable taste of fresh, home-grown, potatoes. All potatoes (except for maincrops) will benefit from chitting prior to planting out. The chitting process encourages the seed to sprout, which then when planted, helps them to establish more readily, leading to bigger crops. Simply place them, blunt end up, in an old egg box until the shoots are approximately 1 to ½cm (½ to 1in). Potatoes are delivered in 1kg bags, each pack containing approx. 8-14 tubers."},{"id":8334957642039,"title":"Potato Foremost (First Early Seed Potato) AGM","handle":"potato-foremost-first-early-seed-potato-agm","description":"A great British favourite, Foremost produces plenty of firm, white fleshed tubers which show good resistance to scab and have a very good flavour. Growing Vegetable Plants in February
The weather may be chilly, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still grow vegetables in February! Whether you have access to a greenhouse or would rather grow your veggies in covered beds or on your windowsill, you’ll find plenty of varieties at Fothergill’s.
If growing outside, however, we do recommend allowing your plants the opportunity to acclimatise to the cold environment. Gradually harden them off by leaving them outdoors during the day and bringing them inside at night for around seven days. Don’t worry too much; young plants like plugs are far more resistant to transplant shock during the colder months than those that are fully grown.
You may choose to avoid the frost altogether and grow your vegetables indoors instead. Plant them in plug trays or containers in a well-lit area with plenty of warmth - the kitchen windowsill should do the trick! Keep your soil nice and moist, and look forward to transplanting them outside when spring comes around.
