Lobelia Seeds

Lobelia seeds (Lobelia erinus) are a fantastic choice for adding soft, delicate colour to your garden. A classic of summer bedding and container displays, this attractive half-hardy annual is extremely reliable and continually covered in tiny, bright blooms, often right until the first frosts.

At Fothergill’s, we have many wonderful and versatile lobelia seeds to suit every garden. Trailing lobelias are simply stunning in mixed patio pots and hanging baskets, while neat, compact varieties work well as ground cover in the border and formal bedding schemes – pair them with taller flowers like antirrhinum seeds to add visual interest and contrast. When to Sow Lobelia Seeds

Lobelia seeds should be sown indoors from late winter to spring, around January to April, for the best chance of successful germination. Once plants have established, you can then gradually introduce them to the outdoors after the last frosts in May. If preferred, you can also sow lobelia seeds outdoors once the weather has warmed in May or June, though sowing indoors earlier will mean a longer flowering period.

How to Grow Lobelia Seeds

Sow lobelia seeds indoors thinly in trays of compost, pressing the seeds into the surface. Don’t cover the seeds, as lobelia needs light to germinate, but do keep the soil moist. Leave the tray in a warm environment at a temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) and seedlings should appear within 7-14 days.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out in tiny clumps. Gradually accustom them to outside conditions (“harden them off”) and plant them in their final flowering position from late May, after the last frost.

For compact displays, plant the clumps 10-15cm (4-6in) apart. This will encourage them to merge together. Lobelias do best in moist, but well-drained soil in a sunny position. Feed your lobelias with a high-potassium fertiliser and water them daily during hot spells.
