When to Plant Lettuce Plants

Plant lettuce from early spring to late summer, depending on the variety. Most lettuce plants can go outside from March to August, once the risk of frost has passed. If you’re planting in early spring, use cloches or fleece to protect young plants from cold snaps. And if you’re planning a continuous harvest, plant in succession every few weeks.

How to Grow Lettuce Plants

Lettuce grows best in moist, well-drained soil with plenty of sun or light shade. Space plants 20-30cm apart, depending on the variety, and water regularly to prevent bolting. For cut-and-come-again types, harvest outer leaves as needed, leaving the central growth intact for continuous picking. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, especially in damp weather.
