How to Plant Muscari Bulbs

Muscari bulbs should be planted in autumn between the months of September and November. It’s important that your flower bulbs are given the opportunity to develop a strong root system before winter frosts arrive.

As we mentioned earlier, muscari plants aren’t especially high-maintenance and can thrive in a variety of locations. Choose a spot which is either in full sun or partial shade. They will, however, require a well-draining soil as they are prone to rotting in waterlogged soils. Consider digging in some compost or grit to break up your soil and encourage better draining.

As for planting, you’ll need a hole about 3 times the depth of your muscari bulb. Make sure that the bulb’s pointed side is facing upwards and allow around 10cm between each bulb. Once you’ve covered your bulbs in soil, we’d recommend watering the soil well to help settle your bulbs in.

How to Grow Muscari Bulbs

We weren’t lying when we said muscari bulbs are easy to grow. Once they’re in the ground and watered in, they won’t require much additional watering - the UK’s weather should simply do the trick. As for feeding, you have the option to add compost to the soil when planting, but they won’t need much else.

When your muscaris begin to fade, you can either deadhead the flowers or leave them to selfseed. We do insist that you don’t cut back your plants’ foliage when they flower, as this is where the sun’s energy is stored for photosynthesis.
