Lupin Seeds

Add bold spikes of colour to your borders with our range of lupin seeds. Choose from classic perennial Lupin Russell Mixed varieties with their dramatic bi-colour spires, or the delicate annual Snow Pixie for compact charm, or explore our other exceptional cultivars. These cottage garden favourites establish quickly, creating eye-catching vertical interest from late spring through summer.

Lupins thrive in well-drained, slightly acidic soil, perform best in full sun, and can be sown early indoors or directly outdoors. These hardy perennials self-seed readily yet remain non-invasive, returning each season with increasingly impressive displays. Their nectar-rich flowers attract pollinators while adding architectural height to borders.

Pair with delphinium seeds and foxglove seeds for more vertical impact. Complete your planting scheme with our soil improvers to create the perfect growing conditions.

When to Sow Lupin Seeds

Sow perennial lupin seeds indoors from March to June for sturdy plants ready to be transplanted, or sow them directly outdoors in April after the soil has warmed. For earlier blooms, start seedlings under cover in early spring; they typically emerge in 21-28 days, after which they can be planted out until as late as October to flower the following year.

How to Grow Lupin Seeds

For indoor sowing, plant seeds of perennial lupins 1.5cm (1/2in) deep in moist, well-draining compost. Keep the soil damp and expect seedlings to appear in 21-28 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, carefully transplant them to 8cm pots and always hold them by a leaf to avoid damaging the delicate stems. Harden off the plants for 7-10 days before moving them outside. If sowing outdoors, wait until April and sow directly into prepared, watered soil. Plant seeds 1.5cm (1/2in) deep and thin the seedlings to 5cm (2in) apart once they're established.
