When to Plant Hyacinth Bulbs

Hyacinth bulbs are the perfect bulbs to plant in Autumn, starting from September onwards, when the soil has cooled but before the first hard frosts. This gives them time to establish roots before winter while avoiding premature sprouting. It is technically possible to grow hyacinths indoors at other times of year through “forcing” them, but they tend to do best when grown outdoors.

How to Grow Hyacinth Bulbs

Plant bulbs outdoors 10cm (4in) deep (or about three times their height) with the pointed end up, spacing them about the same distance apart. In containers, cluster bulbs closely together for a dramatic impact, but avoid allowing them to touch. Water them thoroughly after planting, then only sparingly until growth appears. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this will feed next year's bulbs. For indoor hyacinths, keep pots in bright, cool spots to prolong flowering.
