How to Grow Globe Onion Seeds

Like we mentioned, it’s best to sow your onion seeds indoors before exposing them to the outside world. Sow them in trays or plant pots between December and February, gently scattering them over the surface of your compost before lightly covering them with around 1cm of compost. Store them on a sunny windowsill and ensure that the compost stays nice and moist. Don’t feel defeated if they don’t germinate immediately - this can take as long as two weeks, so just keep an eye on them.

By late March - early April, your seedlings should be ready for planting outdoors. To give them the best chance at surviving through spring, you’ll want to harden them off for a few hours each day for around a week.

Find yourself a sunny spot in the garden with well-draining soil and plant your seedlings, spacing them about 10cm apart. They’ll need watering regularly, ensuring that the soil stays moist during dry spells. Don’t forget to stay on the lookout for weeds - onion plants don’t like competition!

How to Harvest Globe Onion Seeds

After months of hard work and commitment, your globe onions will be ready for harvesting between August and September. You’ll know they’re ready when the leaves bend over and begin to yellow. Take your time with harvesting and gradually lift them with a garden fork.

Next, leave your onions out in a warm, well-ventilated spot to cure for around a week to give the skin a chance to dry. Once cured, you can store your onions in a dark, dry spot, where they can last through the entire winter!
