Blueberry Plants

Homegrown blueberries are bursting with flavour – sweet, slightly sharp, and fresher than anything you’ll find in the shops. They add a fresh touch to breakfast bowls, are delicious baked in muffins and fruitcakes, or are great enjoyed by the handful straight from the bush.

Blueberry plants are a good choice for both beginners and experienced gardeners. They grow happily in pots, making them ideal for patios and balconies, and require minimal upkeep. With the right acidic soil and plenty of sunshine, they’ll provide reliable harvests for years to come. Many varieties also offer beautiful spring flowers and vivid autumn foliage, adding extra colour to your space as well as flavour to your kitchen.

When to Plant Blueberry Plants

The best time to plant blueberry plants is between autumn and early spring, from November to March, while they are dormant. This allows their roots to establish before the growing season begins. If planting in containers, you can do so at any time, but avoid extreme cold or heat for the best results. Blueberries prefer a sheltered spot with plenty of sunlight and thrive in acidic soil with good drainage.

How to Grow a Blueberry Plant

Plant blueberry plants in acidic soil with a pH of 4.5-5.5, using ericaceous compost if growing in pots. Choose a sunny, sheltered position for best results. Water regularly with rainwater rather than tap water, as doing so maintains the soil’s acidity. In spring, apply a mulch of pine needles or bark to help retain moisture. Blueberries are self-fertile but crop more heavily when grown alongside another variety. Prune lightly in winter to remove old wood and encourage new growth.
