How to Plant Anemone Bulbs

Anemones are actually pretty straightforward to grow. Your first step, however, should be to work out whether you’re growing spring-flowering anemones - blanda varieties - or summer/autumn-flowering anemones, as this can affect your growing process.

Spring-flowering anemone bulbs and tubers should typically be planted between September and October. In contrast, summer/autumn flowering anemones, such as the rhizome or fibrous-rooted hybrid types, Serenade, Honorine and Frilly, should be planted around April - you can shop these varieties as plants on our site!

Depending on the variety, certain anemones prefer to grow in full sunlight, whereas others prefer dappled shade. We’d recommend considering the conditions of your garden and choosing your anemones accordingly.

Once you’ve worked out what kind of anemone you’re dealing with, let’s get them in the soil! Start by soaking bulbs overnight to fully hydrate them before planting. These flowers prefer well-draining soil and should be planted at a depth of around 8cm. Give them around 10cm of space between positions and cover them gently with soil.

How to Grow Anemone Bulbs

Once your anemone bulbs are in the ground, the next step is to take care of them. Water them well after planting to give them the best chance at establishing strong roots. When they’re established, you can typically rely on the UK’s climate to keep them hydrated. Keep an eye on the moisture of your soil during dry spells, however.

When your flowers gradually fade, leave them as they are - they’ll continue to gather sunlight in order to nourish the following year’s blooms. When the leaves eventually die, you can take the time to tidy them up.
