Melon Seeds
Cucumis melo, Latin for melons, are a member of the cucurbitaceae (Gourd) family, making them relatives to squashes and cucumbers. They originate from Africa and Southwest Asia, making their way slowly into Europe towards the end of the Roman Empire. Although the majority of the melon varieties we buy in supermarkets are shipped from warmer countries, it is possible to successfully grow flavoursome melons in the UK.
Melons do best in a humid atmosphere, in rich, fertile, deep soil. Growing in a greenhouse, under cloches, cold frames or just a warm, sheltered spot in the garden is ideal. Also ensuring there is plenty of ventilation when the plants are flowering will help to encourage pollination.
