Antirrhinum Seeds

Antirrhinum Seeds

Antirrhinum seeds, or snapdragons, are a much-loved old favourite which has been grown in cottage gardens for generations (and often become naturalised in them). With their beautiful spires in shades ranging from soft pastels to bold reds and yellows, they make a wonderful addition to beds, borders and pots, blooming all through the summer and into autumn.

At Fothergill’s, we have a fantastic variety of antirrhinum seeds for every garden. Taller types are great for borders and the cut flower garden, while neat, compact strains are ideal as summer bedding or container plants. As short-lived perennial flower seeds, they will survive winter in milder regions but are usually treated as annuals. Browse our complete collection below and get growing!

When to Sow Antirrhinums

As winter-sowing flower seeds, antirrhinum seeds are best sown indoors from January to March. This gives them enough time to develop strong seedlings before the outdoor planting season begins. You can also sow snapdragon seeds outdoors in late spring or early summer, once the soil is warm and the frost risk has passed. However, because they take a long time to grow, most gardeners prefer to start snapdragons indoors – that way, you’ll enjoy a longer flowering period.

Grow Antirrhinums from Seed

Start antirrhinum seeds indoors in seed trays or small pots using a good-quality, well-drained seed compost. Sow the seeds thinly, lightly cover them with compost and keep them moist. Place the trays in a warm, bright spot or a propagator, as they need temperatures of 16-18 degrees to germinate. Once the seedlings have developed, prick them out into individual pots.

Once the risk of frost has passed and the weather warms, harden off the seedlings gradually by placing them outdoors for a few hours each day. After 7–10 days, transplant them into their final positions, spacing them around 20-30cm (8-12in) apart in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Keep your antirrhinums well-watered and deadhead spent blooms to encourage longer flowering periods.
