Antirrhinum Seeds
A much-loved old favourite which has been grown in cottage gardens for centuries, often becoming naturalised in them. Even today you may see the plants living happily in crevices in old walls. We offer some delightful older varieties and the best of modern breeding and there are antirrhinums for every use and situation.
Taller types are a delight in the middle of borders and great for cutting; neat, compact strains are ideal as summer bedding, and there is even a trailing one for baskets and other containers. Strictly short-lived perennials, antirrhinums are best treated as annuals, thriving in partial shade and in well-drained, reasonably fertile soil.
When the first flush of flowers have finished in early summer, cut back the plants to about half their height to encourage bushy growth and more flowers a few weeks later. Regular feeding with a good quality plant food will also boost their performance and give a longer flowering season.
How to Sow and Grow Antirrhinums
Sow indoors 0.5cm(¼in) deep in trays of compost, water well and place on a warm kitchen windowsill. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. Transplant seedlings 5cm(2in) apart to further trays when large enough to handle. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions, before planting out 20-25cm(8-10in) apart, when frosts are over.
