How to Grow Begonia Plants

Gently take the begonia plant from its pot, ready for planting out. Choose a spot with partial shade and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Before planting, prepare the soil by removing weeds and incorporating compost or a general-purpose fertiliser. Plant begonias at the same depth as their original pots, spacing them about 20-25cm (8-10in) apart so that they have room to grow. Water thoroughly after planting to help them settle in.

To keep your begonias thriving, water regularly to maintain evenly moist soil but avoid waterlogging. Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser and deadhead spent blooms as they develop.

When to Plant Begonias

Begonia plants are delivered ready to plant and can be placed outside from April to June once the risk of frost has passed. This is later than tubers are typically planted (spring) because the plants have already done most of their development, and just need a sunny spot to bloom.
