Achillea Plants

Achillea Plants

Achillea plants are an excellent choice for any gardener looking for hardy, long-lasting colour. These hardy perennials grow easily in sunny borders, producing clusters of small, flat-topped flowers in all sorts of colourful shades. Achillea Terracotta is one of the best orange-flowered varieties and looks great with Echinacea plants and Rudbeckia plants; Lilac Beauty, as the name suggests, is a soft lilac pink. For even more colour, other Achilleas come in white, yellow, red, and more.

The soft, feathery foliage of an Achillea plant creates a gorgeous texture, while their drought tolerance makes them a practical and reliable plant to grow, too. Loved by pollinators, Achillea’s flowers provide a valuable nectar source for bees and butterflies throughout summer – and because they are supplied as 9cm potted plants, these Achilleas are ready to plant out as soon as you get them.

When to Plant an Achillea Plant

Achillea plants can be planted in spring or autumn as long as the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Spring planting, from March to May, allows them to establish before flowering in summer. Autumn planting, from September to October, gives roots time to settle before winter, leading to strong growth the following year. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot for best results. These potted plants are supplied ready to plant out.

How to Grow an Achillea Plant

Plant Achillea in full sun and light, well-drained soil—they thrive in dry conditions and do not like heavy, wet ground. Space the plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart to allow for growth. Water well after planting, then only occasionally, as Achillea is drought-tolerant once established. Remove faded flowers to encourage more blooms, and cut back the plants in late autumn or early spring to promote fresh and healthy growth.
