How to Grow Tomatoes from Seed
For an early start, sow tomato seeds indoors in a sunny windowsill from February to April. Keep them warm and moist, maintaining temperatures of around 18-20°C. Your seedlings are ready to transplant once they’re large enough to handle and the risk of frost has passed.
When it comes to planting out, you have plenty of options. Tomatoes do well in greenhouses, but can also grow outdoors in a vegetable patch, raised bed, window box or pot on your patio. All that matters is choosing the right variety for your space, and providing at least 8 hours of sunlight per day.
Water and feed your tomato plants regularly with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stake or cage indeterminate types to provide support, and pinch out any side shoots as they appear. Most varieties begin to ripen from July onwards – ready for your summer salads and barbecues!
