Sow & Grow

PREPARATION • Remove all weeds, surface stones and debris. • Dig or rotovate the soil to a depth of 15-22cm. • Create a level, firm surface by close treading, heel to heel or by rolling the whole area. Rake until the surface soil is fine and crumbly. • If possible, leave the area to settle for a few weeks. Level any uneven areas and remove any weeds that appear. • To give the lawn a good start a pre-sowing fertiliser can be raked in at the recommended rate. Seed should not be sown until 5-7 days after application. SOWING • The best time to sow is when the soil is warming up after a rain shower. • Shake the box before sowing half the seed along the area and half the seed across the area to give even coverage. • Sow the seed at a rate of 35g per square metre. • Rake in the seed. If no rain falls within 1 week water thoroughly with a fine spray. • The sown area should be kept moist until the seed is well established. Young grass will appear in 14-21 days. • Weeds are likely to appear from the soil. These will be killed off with regular mowing. LAWNCARE • If the weather is dry keep the soil moist with regular watering using a fine spray. • Keep off the lawn until the grass is 5-8cm high. • Make the first cut at this stage just ‘topping’ the grass. Subsequent cuts can gradually be lowered to an ideal height of 25mm. • Mow regularly to maintain a healthy lawn (try not to remove more than one third of the height in any one mow). • A good fertiliser should be applied at least once a year as recommended by the manufacturer. • Rake off dead leaves in the autumn and winter.

FAQs

When is the best time to sow All Round Lawn Seed?

All Round Lawn Seed can be sown in spring, summer, or autumn when soil temperatures are suitable for germination. The best results typically come from sowing in early autumn (September) or spring (April-May) when the soil is warm and moist, but avoid sowing during very hot, dry periods or when frost is expected. Autumn sowing is favoured as the combination of warm soil and cooler air temperatures creates ideal conditions for strong root development before winter.

How long does All Round Lawn Seed take to germinate?

Lawn seed typically germinates within 7-14 days under ideal conditions, though this can vary depending on soil temperature, moisture levels, and weather. You should see visible growth within two weeks, with the lawn becoming established enough for light use after 6-8 weeks. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination by watering lightly and regularly, especially during dry spells, to ensure even establishment across the entire seeded area.

Can All Round Lawn Seed be used for overseeding an existing lawn?

Yes, our lawn seed is ideal for overseeding worn or patchy areas in an existing lawn. Simply prepare the area by scarifying or raking to expose the soil, sow the seed at the recommended rate, and keep well-watered. This helps thicken thin areas and rejuvenate tired lawns without requiring a complete renovation. For best results, mow the existing grass short before overseeding and avoid heavy foot traffic on the newly seeded areas until the grass is well established.
