When to Sow Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds should be sown indoors from late April to May for the best results. Use small pots with quality seed compost, keeping them in a warm, bright place. If sowing outdoors, wait until late May or early June when the soil has warmed up and the risk of frost has completely passed. Early sowing gives your pumpkins plenty of time to develop before harvest in autumn.

How to Grow Pumpkin Seeds

To grow pumpkin seeds, sow clusters of 2-3 seeds 12mm (1/2in) deep in pots with moist, well-drained compost. Place the pots in a warm, sunny spot to encourage germination, which typically takes 5-10 days. Once seedlings are established, harden them off gradually before planting outside in late spring or early summer. Choose a sunny location with rich, well-prepared soil, adding organic matter to support growth. Plant pumpkins with plenty of space, as they require room to spread out. Water pumpkin plants regularly, especially during dry spells, and feed every 1-2 weeks with a high-potassium fertiliser once flowers start to form. They will be ready for harvest in autumn.
