Product Description

Our special statice mixed seeds are guaranteed to bring a charming and traditional splash of colour to your garden. Also known as Sea Lavender, statice (Limonium sinuatum) is known for its vibrant, papery, tightly-packed flowers in shades of purple, pink, yellow, white, and blue. These beautiful plants are half hardy annuals, which means they can survive outside until the frost, and complete their life cycle in one year.

Statice seeds thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, making them an ideal choice for bedding plants for borders, rock gardens, and containers. They grow to a height of about 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) and produce clusters of small, colourful blooms on sturdy stems, blooming from June to September. An excellent cutting flower, statice lasts well in fresh arrangements and bouquets, and looks beautiful in dried arrangements too.

Sow & Grow

Sow indoors, February-April. A warm kitchen windowsill is all you need for starting these seeds. Sow, 0.5cm (¼") deep, in trays of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. Transplant them, 5cm (2") apart, to other trays, when large enough to handle. Always hold by a leaf, never by the stem. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into well-drained soil, May-June, 20cm (8") apart, when frosts are over. Flowers: June to September.

Does statice have deep roots?

Statice can be either an annual or perennial; annuals have smaller, less established roots because they complete their life cycles in one year. Our statice seeds are half-hardy annuals, so their roots won’t be too deep. As such, you can grow them in pots as well as flower beds.

Does statice need support?

No, statice flowers don’t need support. It has sturdy stems that are self-supporting, even in light winds. But if your statice is planted somewhere shady, it can become stretched as it grows, in which case it might benefit from a support or grow-through ring. Statice flowers are generally low-maintenance, not just in terms of support, but watering and feeding too.

What grows well with statice?

Pair statice with cosmos or zinnia for colour. Or, for plants that thrive in a similar environment, consider lavender, echinacea, or salvia. If you're keen to pair your statice with other dried cut flowers, consider Helichrysum (Strawflowers) and grasses for indoor displays.
