RHS Onion (Spring) Matrix

Allium cepa spring onion seeds, including Onion (Spring) Matrix, can be sown from early spring (February-Match) to early Autumn (September). They do well in cooler temperatures, so can be planted either at the beginning or the tail end of warmer weather. For continuous harvests, sow at regular intervals throughout the growing season.

Matrix Spring Onions are easy to grow and thrive in well-drained, fertile soil. Start by sowing seeds directly outdoors in a sunny spot, about 1cm (1/2in) deep, in rows spaced 15-20 cm apart. Water them to keep the soil moist. Spring onions, in general, are low-maintenance, because they don’t need to be thinned and aren’t demanding in terms of fertiliser, soil, or care. You can also follow the same guidelines to plant them in containers if you don’t have garden beds.

Onion (Spring) Matrix takes around 8-12 weeks to grow, depending on growing conditions. For spring sowings, they’ll usually be ready for harvesting in late spring or early summer. Keep in mind that these onions can continue to grow well into autumn if planted in the right conditions. Harvest when the stems are thick and crisp, and the bulbs are just starting to form, for the best flavour and texture.
