Sow & Grow

Sow indoors March-April. A warm kitchen windowsill is all you need for starting these seeds. Sow thinly, 0.5cm (¼") deep, in a pot of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Transplant to individual pots when 10-15cm (4-6") tall. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out May-June into fertile compost in patio tubs with drainage holes or baskets, when frosts are over. Harvest: August-October.

Bought these regular for three years , this year opened packet said to contain 20 seeds and there was only 15 !! 3 of which were microscopic- fuming 😡

How many Tumbling Tom tomato plants per hanging basket?

For a 25cm hanging basket, one Tumbling Tom plant will be enough. In a larger 35cm basket, two or three plants would fill the space but still leave enough room for healthy growth and fruit production.

Do tumbler tomatoes need staking/support?

If you’d like your Tumbling Toms to have a little more height before they hang down, you can stake them as you would with any other kind of tomato. But their trailing habit is part of the appeal and is why they make lovely hanging basket additions.

What compost is best for tomato plants?

For best results, use a high-quality, well-draining peat compost. We tend to recommend avoiding compost made from recycled garden waste which can be varied in both consistency and quality.
