Thyme Seeds

Sow thyme seeds from February to May, thinly and 0.5cm (1/4in) deep, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position indoors, keeping them moist as they germinate. A temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. 

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings individually to 8cm (3in) pots. Grow on in cooler but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts) before planting out, 25cm (10in) apart, in May-July into warm, well-drained soil. Give cloche protection in autumn to allow picking into winter. 

The best time to harvest your Thyme seeds is from March to November. Pick the fresh leaves and tender shoots as required. Thyme can also be dried and stored well. Cut off the flowering shoots to retain the best flavour.

Unlike other herbs, Thyme seeds are slow to germinate, often taking 2-4 weeks. If your Thyme seeds struggle to sprout, consider using a clear plastic cover or propagator to help maintain moisture and heat levels. Once they germinate, provide them with good airflow to increase their chances of growing.

For the best results, sow Thyme seeds indoors from February to May, when temperatures are more stable for germination. Alternatively, direct sowing outdoors can be done from April to June in a warm, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. In milder climates, autumn sowing is possible, but young plants will need protection from frost over winter.
