Sow & Grow

Sow indoors for surest results, January-March or September-October, 1.5cm (½") deep, 5 seeds per 12cm (5") pot of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame, greenhouse or cool windowsill. A temperature of 15°C (60°F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 12-21 days. Pinch out the growing tip, when two pairs of leaves have formed, to encourage bushy growth. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into well-drained soil, March-May, 30cm (12") apart. Support with tall canes or netting. Or, sow outdoors for ease, April-May, where they are to flower, 1.5cm (½") deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Sow 2 seeds together, every 30cm (12"). Remove weaker seedling, which can then be transplanted. Seeds sown in autumn generally flower earlier the following year. Flowers: May to October. Pick blooms regularly to prolong the flowering season.

How to grow ‘Cupani’ sweet pea seeds

Sow ‘Cupani’ sweet pea seeds in autumn or early spring for strong, healthy plants. Soak the seeds overnight before planting to help them germinate, then plant them in deep pots or seed trays with moist, well-drained compost. Keep them in a cool, bright place and transplant outside once the risk of frost has passed.

Train the plants up supports like trellises or obelisks, and water regularly. Pick flowers often to encourage more blooms and enjoy their wonderful scent all summer long.

Is Cupani sweet pea invasive?

No, sweet peas are not invasive. It’s a climbing plant, but not one that spreads uncontrollably – while it can spread if left to self-seed, it won’t take over your garden. Regular deadheading or cutting flowers for vases will keep it tidy.

What is the difference between ‘Cupani’ and ‘Matucana’ sweet peas?

Both ‘Cupani’ and ‘Matucana’ sweet peas have deep purple and magenta flowers with a strong, sweet fragrance. ‘Cupani’ is the original, dating back to 1699, while ‘Matucana’ is a modern selection bred for its rich colour and scent. ‘Matucana’ tends to have slightly larger blooms, but both varieties are excellent choices for climbing displays and cut flowers.
