Sage Seeds

Sage seeds typically germinate in 14-28 days, depending on temperature and moisture levels. Warmer conditions tend to speed up the process, while cooler temperatures may cause delays. Keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged will help more of the seeds sprout.

For the best results, sow Sage seeds indoors from February to March. Sow thinly at a depth of 0.5cm (1/4in) in small trays of compost. Water well and place in a warm position with a temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F). Seedlings usually appear within 14-28 days. Once large enough to handle, transplant them individually into 8cm (3in) pots and grow on in cooler but not cold conditions. Gradually harden off young plants before planting them outside in May or June, spacing them 30cm (1ft) apart in well-drained soil.

Alternatively, to sow directly outdoors, plant seeds from April to May in finely prepared soil that has already been watered. Sow thinly at a depth of 0.5cm (1/4in) and, once seedlings appear, thin them to 30cm (1ft) apart. Harvest sage leaves as needed throughout the year. The leaves can also be dried and stored for later use.
