Our Parisian Gherkin cucumber seeds are the perfect addition to any vegetable garden. This French heirloom vegetable seed variety, also known as Cornichon de Paris, has been a staple in Parisian markets for generations. It's specifically grown for its small, crisp cucumbers, which are ideal for making traditional pickled gherkins. The plants are highly productive and their fruits are best harvested when they reach around 2.5cm (1 inch) in length.

Parisian Gherkins are firm and crunchy with a classic cucumber flavour. Unlike bigger gherkins, cornichons stay crisp and don't get watery in the middle, so they're perfect for fans of anything pickled. Sow: Indoors, March-April, for surest results, 0.5cm (¼") deep, on edge, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 21-24°C (70-75°F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. When plants have developed 3 or 4 leaves, transplant to 12cm (5”) pots and grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 60cm (2') apart, during May-June, into fertile, well-drained soil. Or sow outdoors May-June, for ease, where they are to crop. Sow two seeds per position, 0.5cm (¼") deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Allow 60cm (2') between rows. When large enough, thin to leave the stronger plant. Harvest: July-October.

How big do cornichons de Paris grow?

Cornichons de Paris plants grow to roughly 10-15 cm in height, and their fruits - the gherkins - get to 5cm long, which makes them the perfect size for pickling. You’ll know they’re the right size when they’re dark green with slight light green stripes appearing.

Are gherkins just small cucumbers?

Yes: gherkins are a particular kind of cucumber. In fact, the name “gherkin” comes from the early modern Dutch word “gurken”, meaning small pickled cucumber. You can pickle any kind of cucumber, but if you want classic gherkins, you’ll need a variety that matures at a smaller size and with bumpy skin like cornichons de Paris.

What is the difference between a gherkin and a cornichon?

Gherkins and cornichons are essentially the same. The difference is that cornichons are picked at a smaller size than typical gherkins. Their small size makes them crunchier and punchier than the average gherkin, too.
