Beetroot Boltardy

Sow ‘Boltardy’ beetroot seeds directly into well-prepared soil, free from stones, from March to July. Space seeds thinly in shallow drills and cover lightly with soil. Keep the ground moist to encourage even germination. Once seedlings appear, thin them out to allow room for roots to develop. Water regularly, especially in dry weather, and keep the area weed-free. Beetroot grows well in full sun and benefits from occasional feeding with a general-purpose fertiliser. 

Harvest ‘Boltardy’ beetroot from early summer to autumn, around 8-10 weeks after sowing. For the most tender roots, pick when they’re just larger than a golf ball. If left to mature, they develop a richer, earthier flavour. Gently twist or lift roots from the soil rather than pulling to avoid damaging them. The leaves can also be picked in moderation and used fresh in salads or cooked like spinach. 

Sow ‘Boltardy’ beetroot seeds outdoors from March to July when the soil is workable. For the earliest crops, sow under cloches or in a greenhouse in late winter. Boltardy is a reliable choice for early sowing because of its resistance to bolting – hence its name. Stagger sowings every few weeks for a continuous harvest throughout the season.
