How to Grow Basil Plants

Most basil varieties can be grown indoors, all year round in pots or trays of compost at warm temperature of 15-20°C(60-68°F). Simply fill a pot with good compost, plant up and then water little and often. Plants can then be grown on a bright windowsill and leaves harvested all year round, pick little and often for continuous crops of fresh leaves. For summer crops outdoors, gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 20cm(8in) apart. When harvesting pick a few leaves from each plant, so they regrow quickly. Leaves are best picked just before use. For maximum flavour herb leaves should be added to cooked dishes at the last minute.
