Autumn Planting Garlic Bulb Collection
This great value autumn planting garlic collection brings together three outstanding varieties chosen for reliable performance and superb flavour. It includes Provence Wight (2 bulbs), a large softneck garlic producing impressive white bulbs, Kingsland Wight (2 bulbs), a high-quality hardneck variety with striking pink cloves, and Elephant Garlic (5 cloves), known for its enormous bulbs and mild, sweet flavour.
Provence Wight produces generous white bulbs with fat, juicy cloves that are perfect for roasting and everyday cooking. Kingsland Wight delivers a rich, aromatic flavour with plump pink cloves, offering a traditional gourmet garlic experience. Elephant Garlic is closer to a leek in character, producing huge bulbs with a gentle sweetness that works well roasted or eaten fresh.
All varieties are tried and tested for autumn planting, helping ensure strong, healthy growth and dependable harvests. Each bulb is sourced from expert growers and certified disease and virus free, giving you confidence from planting through to harvest.
Garlic types include both hardneck and softneck varieties, each suited to different growing styles and kitchen uses. Hardneck types offer bold flavour and produce edible scapes, while softneck varieties are valued for their versatility and long storage life.
Hardneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon) generally produces fewer but larger cloves and is well suited to colder regions, while Softneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. sativum) matures more quickly, stores for longer, and is often used for plaiting.
Garlic TypesHardneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon)
Generally more hardy than softneck varieties (they are the best choice for northern gardeners) and tend to be a bit larger but with fewer cloves per bulb. They produce 'scrapes' in early summer - a strong, single flower stalk that should be removed and used in all manner of culinary dishes - they taste fantastic!
Softneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. sativum)
Often produce smaller cloves per head but are quicker to mature and will store for longer than hardneck varieties. Softneck types prefer to grow in warmer areas and are generally more mild tasting than hardnecks, soft stems make them perfect for plaiting.
Hardneck types have a distinctive flavour and produce coiled flower stalks known as ‘scapes’ or ‘racamboles’. These are best removed to increase bulb size and are lovely chopped into salad dressings and stir-fries.
Softneck garlics are the ones most commonly grown. They don’t produce a stalk and are known for storing well, traditionally in a plait.
