When to Plant Raspberry Plants

Raspberry plants are best planted from late autumn to early spring, while they are dormant. Bare-root raspberries should be planted in winter, while potted plants can go in the ground year-round. A sunny or lightly shaded spot with fertile, well-draining soil helps them establish quickly. Avoid areas prone to waterlogging, as raspberries dislike sitting in damp conditions.

How to Grow Raspberry Plants

For healthy raspberry plants, plant them in rows with plenty of space to allow for air circulation and fruit production. Water well during dry spells and add a thick mulch of compost or manure each spring to keep moisture in the soil. Summer-fruiting raspberries need support, such as posts or wires, whilst autumn-fruiting varieties can be left to grow freely. Prune autumn varieties back to the ground each winter, while summer raspberries need old fruiting canes removed after harvesting.
