When to Plant Bean Seeds

The best time to plant bean seeds depends on the type. Broad beans can be sown as early as February in milder areas or under cover, while for French and runner beans it’s best to wait until after the last frost, typically from late April through May. For a steady harvest, sow in stages every few weeks. Beans do best in warm soil, so be sure conditions have warmed sufficiently before planting outdoors.

How to Grow Beans from Seed

Sow bean seeds directly into well-drained soil in a sunny spot, spacing them according to the variety. For climbing types, add supports when sowing to avoid disturbing their roots later on. Water them regularly, especially as the plants start flowering, and keep the area weed-free as they grow. If starting indoors, use pots or trays and transplant once seedlings are strong enough and the weather is mild.
