This year’s Chelsea Flower Show celebrates the theme ‘Your Space, Your Story’, a tribute to the individuality of every gardener. That spirit is reflected in the diverse and breathtaking garden designs on display. While each space tells its own unique story, several standout trends are emerging across the show.
Climate Resilience
A number of show gardens embrace climate-conscious design, featuring Mediterranean and coastal planting schemes. Highlights include the volcanic-inspired King’s Trust Garden, which explores the life-giving power of seeds, and the Hospitalfield Arts Garden, evoking a coastal dune landscape with an emphasis on form, foliage, and texture.
Places of Sanctuary
Emotional wellbeing and mindfulness take centre stage in many gardens this year. Designs focus on calm, reflection, and unhurried living, using elements such as flowing grasses, muted palettes, and tucked-away seating. The Addleshaw Goddard: Freedom to Flourish Garden captures this beautifully, drawing inspiration from the Norfolk landscape. Its natural-material gabions offer wildlife habitats, while soft tones and tranquil planting promote peace and sanctuary.
Colour Palettes & Planting Highlights
The gold medal-winning The Glasshouse Garden by Jo Thompson is a quintessential Chelsea favourite. Deep reds and muted pinks from roses, irises, astrantia and poppies contrast against a neutral backdrop of river birch, ferns, and grasses, creating a harmonious and elegant composition.
Another standout is Monty Don’s much-talked-about Dog Garden, with its relaxed, naturalistic planting style. Designed to be easily replicated at home, it centres around a dog-friendly lawn, bordered by vibrant orange geums, burgundy lupins, and poppies, softened with lavender-blue nepeta and irises.
