Growing Veg in Small Spaces

Here at Fothergill’s, we strongly believe that gardening is for everyone! Whether you’ve got the luxury of several beds, access to a greenhouse or can only grow from your windowsill, gardening is an inclusive hobby that should be enjoyed regardless of your growing space!

There’s nothing quite as rewarding as growing your own produce! Marrying your love of gardening with your love of cooking is one of life’s simple joys, and we can guarantee that your dishes will taste all the more delicious when you’re using home-grown produce. Don’t believe us? Give growing your very own vegetable plants a go!

Take this opportunity to get the whole family involved outdoors and try growing veg in small spaces. We’ve put together a handy list of the best vegetables to grow in small spaces to take you and the kids on a whole new growing adventure.

Growing in a Yard

If you’ve not got the space for flower beds in your outside space, that’s okay! There is plenty of opportunity for growing veg in small spaces like yards. Just buy yourself some pots, compost, and vegetable seeds, and you’re good to go! There are endless possibilities, from carrot seeds to lettuce seeds.

Growing tomatoes in a pot

Dwarf or cherry tomato seeds are the perfect vegetables to grow in pots in small spaces! We recommend a pot that is around 18 inches deep and well-draining. Tomatoes thrive in the sun, so do your best to keep your pot in a sunny, sheltered spot in your yard or garden. You should sow these vegetable seeds between March and April for a healthy harvest between July and September. We recommend watering regularly - especially in warmer weather.

Growing peppers in a pot

Quite like tomatoes, peppers love to grow in full view of the sun. Pepper seeds like bell peppers, chilli peppers, and jalapenos are perfect for planting in a pot that is around 12 inches deep. When it comes to growing in pots, we recommend sowing your peppers sometime between February and March.

Keep a close eye on the growth of your peppers to determine when they’re ready for harvest - they will have a firm and glossy appearance when ready to be picked but can differ in flavour depending on when you choose to harvest them.

Growing Veg On a Windowsill

Can you grow veg indoors, you ask? Of course, you can. The windowsill is a perfect place to grow microgreens indoors. These plants are an ideal introduction to gardening for your youngsters, so why not give them the responsibility of looking after your windowsill garden?

Growing peas from a windowsill

Fill your windowsill container with soil and space your pea seeds around one inch apart and one inch deep. Whether you’re in charge or you’re leaving one of your little ones to look after the pea seedlings, just make sure to keep them well-watered! You can expect your pea shoots to be ready for harvest within around three weeks. Just cut your stalks and leaves up into small pieces, and they’ll be ready to be introduced to your meals! Easy peasy.

Growing herbs from a windowsill

If you’re keen to explore your options when it comes to windowsill gardening, there are endless varieties of herb seeds that can thrive growing indoors. So introduce a new level of flavour to your homemade dishes and experiment with growing herb seeds from your windowsill!

Herbs like basil seeds, parsley seeds, and mint seeds are fantastic for beginners. They only require small containers or pots, around 6 inches deep and need around 6 hours of sunlight per day. Most herb seeds should be planted between February and April. Be sure to keep your soil moist, but don’t overdo it - herb seeds don’t enjoy waterlogged soil!

Be sure to keep on top of harvesting to maintain the health of your plants and encourage further growth!
