What to do in the garden - September

Tasks to Prepare for Autumn

As summer gives way to autumn, September is often a beautiful month – warm days, softer light, and plenty still happening in the garden. It is a great time to enjoy the last bursts of colour while getting ahead with autumn jobs.

Lawns may have suffered during summer heat, but they usually recover quickly once the rain returns. If your grass looks a bit worn, now is the perfect time to give it some care and even re-seed while the soil is warm and damp.

The vegetable garden is bursting with crops, so harvesting will keep you busy. Potatoes and onions should be lifted and stored properly so they last through the winter. And if you would like a supply next year, this is the time to plant onion sets, garlic, and shallots. They are simple to grow and perfect for beginners.

Flower lovers can start planting spring bulbs now too. Small bulbs like crocus and snowdrops do best if planted early in September, and daffodils can go in this month as well. For extra colour next summer, try sowing hardy annuals such as calendula or cornflower – they will overwinter and give you an early display next year.
